It Starts With Surrender
Can I Really Change? Understanding the Power of Surrender in Spiritual Growth
Many of us start each new year with resolutions, but lasting change - especially spiritual transformation - requires more than just willpower. True change begins with surrender to God.
Why Do Most People Fail to Change?
Statistics show that only 6% of people actually accomplish their New Year's resolutions. By the second Friday of January (known as "Quitters Day"), most have already given up. This is because we often try to change through our own strength alone.
What Kind of Change Are We Really Seeking?
While physical goals like weight loss or exercise are common, many of us deeply desire spiritual transformation:
- Becoming more loving
- Growing in patience
- Developing kindness
- Finding true peace and joy
- Breaking free from anxiety and chaos
The Foundation of Real Change: Surrender
The Apostle Paul teaches in Romans 12:1-2 that change begins with surrender to God. This means:
- Offering our whole selves to God
- Dying to our selfish desires
- Saying "no" to ourselves and "yes" to God
- Responding to God's mercy with complete submission
What Does Practical Surrender Look Like?
Surrender involves offering every part of ourselves to God:
- Our minds and thoughts
- Our ears and what we listen to
- Our eyes and what we watch
- Our hands and what we do
- Our feet and where we go
- Our mouths and what we say
Why is Surrender Essential for Change?
True transformation can't happen through willpower alone. When we surrender to God:
- He becomes our master instead of sin
- He transforms us from the inside out
- He changes the way we think
- He reveals His perfect will for our lives
Life Application
This week, practice daily surrender through these steps:
Set an hourly reminder to pray this simple prayer:
"Heavenly Father, you're good and your plan is perfect. I completely surrender to you. I give you my [specific area] and ask you to use it however you desire today. Because sin is not my master - you are."
"Heavenly Father, you're good and your plan is perfect. I completely surrender to you. I give you my [specific area] and ask you to use it however you desire today. Because sin is not my master - you are."
Ask yourself these questions:
- What areas of my life am I still trying to control?
- Where do I need to surrender more fully to God?
- How might my life look different if I truly surrendered everything to Him?
Remember:
Change begins and continues with surrender. It's not a one-time event but a daily choice to yield control to God.
