Sometimes doing the right thing does not make life easier. It can actually make things harder. Joseph's story in Genesis 39 shows what faithfulness looks like when obedience does not produce the outcome we hoped for: keep trusting God, keep choosing what is right, and keep believing He is working even when you cannot see it.
Joseph remained faithful in slavery, faithful in temptation, and faithful after being falsely accused and sent to prison. His circumstances changed dramatically, but God's character did not.
What Do You Do When Doing the Right Thing Makes Life Worse?
One of the hardest tests of faith comes when you are doing what you believe is right and your circumstances still get worse.
You may be praying for your child while watching them move farther from God. You may be fighting for your marriage and still feel disconnected. You may be working with integrity and still be overlooked.
In those moments, it is natural to ask: Why should I keep trying?
Joseph's story gives a simple but difficult answer: stay faithful.
What Does It Mean to Stay Faithful?
Staying faithful means remaining committed to God and His ways even when circumstances do not reward your obedience.
Faithfulness is choosing to trust and obey God because He is worthy, not because obedience guarantees an immediate result.
"Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful."
1 Corinthians 4:2 NIV®
What Happened to Joseph in Genesis 39?
Joseph had already been betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery when Genesis 39 begins.
He arrives in Egypt and is purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian official. Yet even in slavery, Joseph remains faithful.
"The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master."
Genesis 39:2-5 NIV®
Potiphar recognizes Joseph's reliability and eventually places him in charge of his household.
Joseph's life teaches us three important reasons to remain faithful when life is hard.
Reason 1: Stay Faithful Because God Is Faithful
Joseph's circumstances had changed dramatically, but God's presence had not.
Genesis repeatedly says that the Lord was with Joseph.
"If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself."
2 Timothy 2:13 NIV®
Faithfulness is not merely something God does. It is part of His character.
That means God does not stop being faithful when your circumstances become disappointing.
Does Success Mean God Is With You?
Not necessarily.
Genesis 39 describes Joseph experiencing success in Potiphar's house, but his story also shows God's presence when Joseph later enters prison.
Success is not reliable proof of God's presence, and hardship is not reliable proof of His absence.
The better goal is not to chase outcomes. It is to pursue faithfulness.
A Better Question Than "Is This Working?"
Instead of asking only, "Is this producing the result I want?" ask:
- Am I honoring God?
- Am I acting with integrity?
- Am I obeying what Scripture teaches?
- Am I becoming more like Jesus?
- Am I trusting God with the outcome?
Reason 2: Stay Faithful Because God Is Holy
Just as Joseph's situation begins improving, he faces another test. Potiphar's wife repeatedly attempts to draw him into sexual sin.
Joseph refuses.
"How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
Genesis 39:9 NIV®
Joseph's integrity is not built on whether Potiphar might discover what happened. His primary concern is God.
Faithfulness asks not only, "Will I get caught?" but, "Does this honor the God I belong to?"
Why Is It Tempting to Compromise When Life Is Hard?
Pain can create powerful rationalizations.
We may begin thinking:
- "After everything I have been through, I deserve this."
- "God has not fixed my situation, so why should I keep obeying?"
- "No one will know."
- "It is only this one time."
Joseph had already experienced betrayal and slavery. He could have used his pain as an excuse to compromise. Instead, his circumstances did not determine his character.
"Be holy, because I am holy."
1 Peter 1:15-16 NIV®
How Did Joseph Handle Temptation?
Genesis 39 gives us an extremely practical pattern.
Three Things Joseph Did
- He kept saying no. Faithfulness is often a repeated decision, not a one-time choice.
- He avoided unnecessary exposure. Scripture says Joseph kept out of Potiphar's wife's way as much as possible.
- When necessary, he ran. When she physically grabbed him, Joseph left.
"Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace."
2 Timothy 2:22 NIV®
Should You Fight Temptation or Run From It?
Sometimes the most spiritual response to temptation is distance.
We often overestimate our ability to stand close to temptation without eventually giving in. Scripture repeatedly uses the language of fleeing certain sins.
Practical Ways to Create Distance From Temptation
- Remove an app that repeatedly pulls you toward unhealthy behavior.
- Avoid private conversations that cross relational boundaries.
- Ask someone trustworthy to hold you accountable.
- Change routines that consistently place you in vulnerable situations.
- Do not keep easy access to something you are trying to leave behind.
- Leave the situation when temptation becomes intense.
What If Doing the Right Thing Has Bad Consequences?
Joseph does the right thing and still suffers.
Potiphar's wife falsely accuses him, and Joseph is sent to prison. His integrity does not protect him from injustice.
This is one of the hardest truths in Joseph's story: faithfulness does not guarantee an easy outcome.
Christianity does not teach that obedience always produces immediate success, comfort, recognition, or protection from hardship.
Reason 3: Stay Faithful Because God Is Working
Joseph's story appears to move backward again. He has gone from favored son to slave, then from trusted servant to prisoner.
Yet Genesis repeats the same truth:
"But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor."
Genesis 39:20-23 NIV®
Prison did not mean God had stopped working.
Joseph could not see how this chapter connected to the future. God could.
Is Faithfulness Ever Wasted?
No act of obedience to God is meaningless simply because we cannot see the result yet.
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Galatians 6:9 NIV®
This verse does not promise that every faithful choice will produce the exact earthly outcome we want. It does remind us not to measure obedience only by immediate results.
God sees more of the story than we do.
How Do You Stay Faithful When You Feel Like Giving Up?
Remember These Three Truths
- God is faithful. His character and promises do not change with your circumstances.
- God is holy. He calls you to a different way of living, even when compromise seems easier.
- God is working. You rarely have enough information to judge the entire story from the chapter you are currently living.
Joseph did not know what the next chapter contained. Neither do we. Faithfulness means trusting the Author when we cannot see how the story will unfold.
How Can You Stop Letting Circumstances Determine Your Character?
Circumstances create pressure, but they do not have to decide who you become.
When money is tight, integrity still matters. When a relationship is difficult, faithfulness still matters. When someone else seems to be getting ahead through compromise, obedience still matters.
The question is not simply, "What would make this situation easier?" It is, "Who is God calling me to be in this situation?"
A Seven-Day Faithfulness Challenge
Identify one area where you have been tempted to compromise or give up because doing the right thing does not seem to be working.
- Name the specific area.
- Write down what faithfulness looks like there.
- Identify the compromise you are most tempted to make.
- Create one boundary that makes compromise harder.
- Ask someone trustworthy to pray for you.
- Choose faithfulness each day for the next seven days.
- Leave the outcome with God.
Do it not because faithfulness guarantees the result you want, but because God is worthy of your obedience.
A Prayer for Faithfulness
God, help me stay faithful when doing the right thing feels hard or unrewarded. Remind me that You are faithful, You are holy, and You are still working even when I cannot see it. Give me courage to say no to compromise, wisdom to flee temptation, and endurance to keep doing what is right. Help me trust You with the results and become the person You are calling me to be.
Questions for Personal or Group Reflection
- Is there an area where you have started letting your circumstances determine your character?
- Where are you tempted to stop doing what is right because it does not seem to be working?
- Are you avoiding temptation, or are you staying close to it and hoping you will be strong enough?
- Which practical boundary could help you stay faithful?
- Do you believe God is working in your life even when you cannot see evidence of it?
- Are you pursuing faithfulness or primarily chasing a particular outcome?
- What would staying faithful for the next seven days look like in one specific area?
Frequently Asked Questions About Staying Faithful
What does it mean to stay faithful to God?
Staying faithful means continuing to trust God and live according to His ways even when circumstances are difficult or obedience does not produce the outcome you expected.
Why should I keep doing the right thing when it is not working?
Christian faithfulness is rooted in God's character rather than immediate results. Joseph's story shows that obedience may not always make life easier, but God can still be present and working.
Does being faithful guarantee success?
No. Joseph faithfully resisted temptation and was still falsely accused and imprisoned. The Bible does not equate faithfulness with guaranteed comfort or worldly success.
How did Joseph stay faithful in Genesis 39?
Joseph continued serving with integrity, refused Potiphar's wife repeatedly, avoided her when possible, and ran when the temptation became unavoidable.
What does the Bible say about fleeing temptation?
Scripture sometimes calls believers to flee rather than negotiate with temptation. Creating physical, relational, or digital distance can be a wise part of resisting sin.
How can I know God is still working?
We cannot always see what God is doing in the moment. Joseph could not see the future from Potiphar's house or prison, yet Genesis repeatedly emphasizes that the Lord was with him.
Is it okay to feel tired of doing good?
Yes. Galatians 6 acknowledges that people can become weary in doing good. The encouragement is not to deny the weariness but to continue faithfully and not give up.
How can I stay faithful when I am tempted to compromise?
Decide what obedience looks like before the pressure peaks, create distance from avoidable temptation, involve trusted people, remember who you are living for, and keep bringing your attention back to God's character.
What if doing the right thing makes my situation worse?
A worse immediate outcome does not automatically mean you made the wrong choice. Joseph's obedience led to prison before his story moved toward restoration. Faithfulness sometimes requires trusting God before the outcome makes sense.
