Overcoming the Battle No One Sees
Overcoming the Battle That No One Sees
Every one of us is fighting a silent battle. Spiritual warfare isn't just a metaphor-it's a reality. If you're tired, discouraged, or wondering why following Jesus feels like a fight, this message is for you.
New here? We'd love to walk with you as you face your battles. You can join us online or visit us this Sunday in Sugar Land or Richmond.
Life can feel like an uphill battle, and if you've ever wondered why following Jesus sometimes feels harder than you expected, you're not alone. The truth is, we're all fighting a war that others can't see - a spiritual battle that affects every aspect of our lives.
Why Does Life Feel Like a War?
The reality is simple: we are living in a war. This isn't just metaphorical language - it's the spiritual reality described throughout Scripture. From the very beginning in Genesis, when Satan deceived Adam and Eve, a cosmic battle has been raging between good and evil.
When Jesus came to earth, He entered enemy territory on a rescue mission. His goal wasn't just to get us to heaven someday, but to move us from Satan's kingdom into God's kingdom right now. As C.S. Lewis put it, "This universe is at war... we are living in a part of the universe occupied by the dark power."
The War Within Us
Not only are we living in a war, but there's also a war living inside each of us. The apostle Paul described this internal struggle in Romans 7:15: "Why do I want to do what's right, but I end up doing wrong? It's like this battle within me."
Galatians 5:17 explains it this way: "The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants... These two forces are constantly fighting each other so that you are not free to carry out your good intentions."
This internal battle will exist until the day we die. That might sound discouraging, but understanding this reality helps us prepare for the fight.
How the Enemy Attacks Your Soul
1 Peter 2:11 gives us crucial insight into how this battle works: "Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul."
The enemy knows you well. He has studied your patterns, your weaknesses, and your triggers. He knows exactly what buttons to push to get you to say "yes" to temptation again and again.
James 1:14-15 describes the process: "Each person is tempted when they are lured away by their own evil desire and enticed. After desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. And sin, when it's full grown, gives birth to death."
The Deception We All Fall For
Here's the pattern: whatever catches your attention catches your affection, and then it catches you. The enemy uses this principle like a fisherman uses a lure.
At the root of every sin is a lie we believe about God - that somehow what's being offered to us is better than what God has for us. We don't trust that God is truly good and has our best interests at heart.
James warns us not to be deceived into thinking we can keep playing with sin without consequences. The things we play with now will eventually play with us. We think we own our sin, but given enough time, that sin will own us.
The Lie That Keeps Us Trapped
The biggest lie the enemy wants you to believe is this: "My battle is hopeless." He wants you to think there's hope for everyone else but you. This is absolutely false.
Three Weapons for Victory
1. The Holy Spirit
When you give your life to Jesus, God places His Spirit inside you. Romans 8:13 tells us that "by the power of the Holy Spirit, you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body."
A simple but powerful prayer is: "God, I can't. You can. I choose you." This is surrendering to the Holy Spirit's power instead of relying on your own strength.
2. God's Word
Ephesians 6:17 calls Scripture "the sword of the Spirit." When Satan tempted Jesus, He responded with Scripture every time. Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
Make God's Word a regular part of your life - listen to it while driving, read it before bed, or meditate on verses throughout your day.
3. Christian Community
Hebrews 10:24-25 emphasizes the importance of meeting together and "encouraging one another." The word "encouraging" here is the same word used for a general calling troops forward in battle.
You need people in your life who can hold you up when you're struggling - friends you can be completely honest with about your battles.
The Power of Bringing Sin Into the Light
Your heart will stay haunted by sin as long as you keep hiding it. Satan loves darkness and secrecy. James 5:16 says, "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."
When you bring your struggles into the light by sharing them with trusted friends or a small group, you remove Satan's power over that area of your life. Confession brings healing.
Life Application
This week, take an honest inventory of the battles you're fighting that no one else knows about. Remember that you're not alone in this struggle - every person faces internal battles.
Choose one practical step to take:
- Begin praying "God, I can't. You can. I choose you" when you face temptation
- Start listening to Scripture during your commute or daily routine
- Find one trusted person to share your struggle with, or join a small group where you can be authentic
Ask yourself these questions:
- What lie about God am I believing when I give in to this temptation?
- Who in my life can I trust with my real struggles?
- Am I trying to fight this battle in my own strength instead of relying on the Holy Spirit?
- What would freedom in this area of my life look like?
